We often think of mobile dead zones as a rural issue. In reality, the largest coverage gap today is inside buildings. Offices, industrial sites, hospitals and public-sector buildings: these are also the places where mobile usage is highest.
Multiple studies show that most mobile calls and data usage happen indoors, even though indoor mobile coverage is often weak, or sometimes non-existent. The issue is well documented by industry players and regulators, yet it is still too often overlooked in real-estate and industrial projects.
Modern building standards (HQE, BBC, energy-efficient buildings) rely on high-performance thermal insulation materials… which also happen to be very effective at blocking radio signals.
Metal-coated glass, reinforced concrete and industrial structures: the mobile signal is heavily weakened as soon as it enters the building.
New mobile technologies use higher frequencies, which deliver more bandwidth but don’t travel through walls as well. As a result, excellent outdoor coverage no longer guarantees usable indoor coverage even in dense urban areas.
The gradual switch-off of legacy networks is putting many systems at risk (elevators, alarms, security systems, connected devices). Without the right indoor infrastructure, service continuity can no longer be guaranteed. This shift also affects public-safety networks, traditionally built on lower frequencies, which are now beginning their migration to GSM networks.
Poor indoor mobile coverage leads to:
Mobile connectivity is becoming an infrastructure requirement just like power, LAN networks or fiber.
Eliminating an indoor dead zone requires a building-specific approach: radio survey, network design, and the selection of dedicated equipment (DAS, small cells, multi-operator indoor solutions).
For more than 13 years, Telenco has supported the rollout of indoor mobile networks, with a broad range of solutions for commercial, industrial and public buildings.
Our experts can help you design and deploy reliable, scalable indoor mobile coverage solutions.
Offices, factories, hospitals… mobile signal drops where it's needed most. Modern insulating materials and higher 5G frequencies make indoor connectivity a major infrastructure challenge. For 13 years, Telenco has been deploying dedicated solutions
