Designing differently: eco-design as a driver of responsibility

Telenco teams involved in the eco-design process

As a designer and manufacturer of telecom and datacom solutions, Telenco is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its products. This commitment is reflected in a rigorous eco-design approach applied from the earliest stages of development. Carried collectively by the marketing, R&D and purchasing teams, this cross-functional approach enables the design of high-performance, durable products that meet field requirements.

Reducing product environmental impact: a designer’s responsibility

Eco-design means integrating environmental considerations right from the design stage of a product, taking into account its entire life cycle. At Telenco, this approach is part of a broader CSR policy based on the Group’s social, environmental and industrial responsibility.

In practical terms, this means identifying levers to reduce environmental impact without compromising technical performance: choice of raw materials, manufacturing processes, packaging, logistics and product end-of-life. This structured, measurable process draws on multidisciplinary expertise.

A cross-functional approach: teams at the heart of eco-design

Marketing: the strategic starting point

The marketing department plays a key role in anticipating usage, logistical constraints and customer expectations. Packaging optimisation is a concrete example of this. For certain products, such as cords or PTOs, Telenco offers bulk deliveries without individual packaging. When this is required, more responsible alternatives are favoured, such as replacing plastic bags with kraft paper.

Teams also adapt kits according to the type and length of cable used, allowing transport volumes and storage space to be optimised. The objective is clear: offer sustainable, low-packaging solutions aligned with operational realities in the field.

R&D: driving responsible innovation

Product design follows a rigorous methodology where environmental criteria are incorporated from the drafting of specifications. Through Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) conducted at multiple stages of each project, the R&D team acts on several levers: reducing component weight, selecting recycled or lower-impact materials, and optimising design or components.

These decisions are made in close collaboration with the purchasing department to ensure an optimal balance between technical performance, economic viability and impact reduction.

Purchasing: ensuring responsible sourcing

The purchasing team selects suppliers who meet technical requirements while adhering to strict environmental standards. This includes partnering with committed suppliers located close to production sites and maintaining continuous monitoring of lower-carbon-footprint materials.

The department also offers technically validated alternatives made from recycled or recyclable materials. This in-depth work is carried out directly with manufacturers and engineers as part of a continuous improvement approach.

Eco-design is not a statement of intent: it is a structured, iterative and measurable method. It has already enabled Telenco to develop lighter products, reduce packaging volume and optimise logistics flows.
